Background history

St. Leonard’s Club Juniors was formed in September 2003 by Sally Pudney and Graham Bell at St. Leonard’s Church, Lexden. The choir is intended for children aged 7 years and over, and aims to develop the children’s singing and musical ability whilst giving them a way to participate in and contribute to the life of the church.

St. Leonard’s Club Juniors participates in the morning service on the first Sunday of each month, sings for weddings (for which the children receive a small payment) and other occasional services. The choir is run following the structure of the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) ‘Voice for Life’ scheme. Some of our members have already attained the first level of achievement on this scheme, marked by the presentation of a light blue ribbon with R.S.C.M. medal, and a certificate. The children have the opportunity to take part in courses and festivals organised by the RSCM in Essex if they wish to do so.

St. Leonard’s Club Juniors have featured in the local papers and on Anglia Television, and recorded a CD ‘Voices of Light’ in the spring of 2005. Our second CD, ‘Voices of Christmas’, was recorded in July 2006. They also join in other fun activities as a group, away from the church.

St. Leonard’s Club Juniors meets on Monday evenings at St. Leonard’s church from 6.45 – 7.45 p.m. in term time. There is no audition to join – any child who is enthusiastic to sing in the choir and can attend regularly will be welcome. At present our membership is at full capacity (twenty members) and there is a waiting list in operation.
